چکیده

Monitoring large bodies of water, such as the Laurentian Great Lakes in North America, can be challenging and costly. The bathymetry, diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance ( Kd ), particulate backscattering xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">bbp ) are important metrics monitoring water quality lakes have typically been measured two ways: 1) via situ sampling campaigns, which expensive, time-consuming, low spatial resolution, 2) passive optical imagery, errors excess 50%. Recently, ICESat-2, an active LiDAR-based satellite, has proven effective deriving , global oceans. However, validation never done on satellite flyovers taken same day measurements. Likewise, studies freshwater environments limited. Here, we compare data sampled from Lake Michigan Big Glen between August 13th 14th, 2021, results derived ICESat-2 flyover region 2021.We find excellent agreement values satellite-derived all three metrics. This suggests that other future satellites will powerful tools lakes.

A model for the diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling irradiance

[1] The diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance (Kd) is an important parameter for ocean studies. For the vast ocean the only feasible means to get fine-scale measurements of Kd is by ocean color remote sensing. At present, values of Kd from remote sensing are estimated using empirical algorithms. Such an approach is insufficient to provide an understanding regarding the vari...

Diffuse Attenuation Coefficient of Downwelling Irradiance: An Evaluation of Remote Sensing Methods

The propagation of downwelling irradiance at wavelength from surface to a depth (z) in the ocean is governed by the diffuse attenuation coefficient, ) ( d K . There are two standard methods for the derivation of ) ( d K in remote sensing, which both are based on empirical relationships involving the blue-to-green ratio of ocean color. Recently, a semianalytical method to derive ) ( d K from ref...

Evaluation of downwelling diffuse attenuation coefficient algorithms in the Red Sea

Despite the importance of the optical properties such as the downwelling diffuse attenuation coefficient for characterizing the upper water column, until recently no in situ optical measurements were published for the Red Sea. Kirby et al. used observations from the Coastal Zone Color Scanner to characterize the spatial and temporal variability of the diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd(490)) i...

Determination of the Downwelling Diffuse Attenuation Coefficient of Lake Water with the Sentinel-3A OLCI

The Ocean and Land Color Imager (OLCI) on the Sentinel-3A satellite, which was launched by the European Space Agency in 2016, is a new-generation water color sensor with a spatial resolution of 300 m and 21 bands in the range of 400–1020 nm. The OLCI is important to the expansion of remote sensing monitoring of inland waters using water color satellite data. In this study, we developed a dual b...
